体坛英语资讯:Four things we learned from Spanish league matchday 7

MADRID, Sept. 30 -- The seventh round of games in the Liga Santander saw a draw in the Madrid derby, while FC Barcelona claimed their first away win of the season and Sevilla and Real Sociedad shared five goals. Here are some things we learned this weekend in Spain.

1. Goalkeepers aren't just for saves

FC Barcelona keeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen produced a virtuoso display just when his coach Ernesto Valverde most needed it.

Barca traveled to Getafe without an away win all season and without the injured Leo Messi, Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati it didn't look certain they would finally take all three points on the road. However, the Barca keeper not only made a series of important saves to keep Getafe at bay, he also provided the assist for Luis Suarez to score the opening goal in a 2-0 win with a long ball from the back.

The win takes pressure off Valverde until Wednesday, but the Barca boss will hope that his injury crisis in attack clears up sooner rather than later.

2. Madrid derby disappoints

A lot of lines of text were written ahead of the Madrid derby between Atletico and Real Madrid on Saturday night but in the end the game didn't live up to expectations as both sides produced a bit of a damp squib on a game which ended 0-0.

Real Madrid will probably be the happier of the two sides as they know they have come way unbeaten from one of their toughest away games of the season and with Zinedine Zidane showing his ability to produce a very tactical display.

Meanwhile it was a good day for Atletico's Thomas Partey, who was the best player on the pitch with a display of power and poise in midfield.

3. Sevilla and Real Sociedad should challenge for Europe

Real Sociedad would have gone top of the table if they had been able to win away to Sevilla and they took the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal in the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

However, Sevilla's pride had clearly been stung after successive defeats and Julen Lopetegui's men battled back to take an entertaining 3-2 win.

Both sides recruited well over the summer and this game merely highlighted that both of them could challenge for a top four place this season.

4. Looking grim for Gallego

Espanyol coach David Gallego heard the chants of 'Gellego vete ya' (Gallego go now) at the final whistle of his side's 2-0 home defeat to Valladolid on Sunday.

The man in charge of Wu Lei at the club could well lose his job in the coming hours, but the former B-team boss is far from the only man to blame for the club's precarious position.

Playing in Europe needs a squad to be stronger in the following season to meet the demands of playing in midweek and at weekends, but Espanyol are weaker this season than last season after loosing striker Borja Iglesias and Spain defender Mario Hermoso during the summer. Matias Vargas looks interesting in attack but although Jonathan Calleri is a decent forward, there is no way the Uruguayan is going to get close to Iglesias' numbers in front of goal and that is a real problem.
