“Slow City”is a new project focused on preserving the traditional and unique quality of life enjoyed in some of Italy’s smaller cities and towns.“The American urban model has influenced our cities, and puts Italian towns at risk of looking the same.We want to stop this kind of globalization,”says Paolo Saturnini, mayor of the Tuscan city of Greve in Chianti.

The thirty-two Italian city councils that initially joined the“Slow City”program have decided to take further steps by increasing the numbers of traditional family-style restaurants, reducing noise pollution, and concentrating on making their towns more relaxing and people-friendly.

Organic local produce will be encouraged in all restaurants and genetically modified foods will be forbidden.“We can’t stop large fast-food chains from coming here, but we hope that people who come to our towns will not want to eat exactly the same hamburgers they can eat in Melbourne,London or Paris, but want something healthy and different,”says Satumini.

The mayors of these cities, however, are not opposed to progress. They want to keep in step with modern technology, which will make their cities easier to live in.“We are not against the modern world;we just want to protect what is good in our lives and keep the unique character of our towns,”says Saturnini.

The Chinese word“Shanzhai”means a small mountain village, but now it becomes an accepted name for fakes(假货)after“Shanzhai Cellphones”produced by small workshops in southern China became popular in the mainland market over the past two years.

Besides“Shanzhai”electronic products, there are“Shanzhai”movies,“Shanzhai”stars and even a“Shanzhai”Spring Festival Gala,a copy of the 25-year-old traditional show presented by CCTV on Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve.

“Shanzhai”has become a culture of its own, symbolizing anything that imitates something famous. The phenomenon has caused a public debate over whether it is healthy or sick being a copycat.

In southwestern China’s Chongqing Municipality,a“Shanzhai”version“Bird’s Nest”woven by farmers with bamboo attracts wide attention and the“Shanzhai”version“Water Cube”is popular with tourists, too. Both are copies of the famous Olympics buildings in Beijing.

Xie Xizhang,a literature critic, said that taking the“Shanzhai”Gala as an example, when the traditional CCTV program becomes less and less attractive to the audience, the“Shanzhai”version appears naturally to attract people.“In spite of its poor techniques and qualities,‘Shanzhai’culture meets the psychological demands of common people and could be a comfort to their minds,”Xie said.

Tian Huiqun,a professor at Beijing Normal University, said that“Shanzhai”culture never copies classic things, only trendy products. In that sense,it’s like a computer virus, multiplying without meaning.

Though controversial,“Shanzhai”culture is becoming a widely accepted phenomenon.

To the mainstream culture, the rise of“Shanzhai”culture is a challenge as well as a motivation, said Xie.Tian said different kinds of cultures developing together is an ideal situation and it is for the public to choose.

5.The Chinese Word“Shanzhai”may have its origin in ______.

  A.fake cellphones

  B.electronic products

  C.Spring Festival Gala

  二、任务型读写

  阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

It’s common for kids of all ages to experience school anxiety—school-related stress. This is often most apparent at the end of summer when school is about to start again, but it can occur year-round.Where does the stress and anxiety come from?

  Teachers

A good experience with a caring teacher can cause a lasting impression on a child’s life—so can a bad experience. While most teachers do their best to provide students with a positive educational experience, some students are better suited for certain teaching styles and classroom types than others. If there’s a mismatch between student and teacher,a child can form lasting negative feelings about school or his own abilities.

  Friends

Friends can also be a source of stress.Concerns about not having enough friends, not being in the same class as friends, not being able to keep up with friends in one particular area or another, and interpersonal conflicts are a few of the very common ways kids can be stressed by their social lives at school.Dealing with these issues alone can cause anxiety in even the most secure kids.

  Bullies(欺凌弱小者)

Things have changed in the world of bullies since I was

a kid.The good news is that teachers and parents are paying more attention. Many schools now have anti-bullying programs and policies.Though bullying does still happen, help is generally more easily accessible than before.

The bad news is that bullying has gone high-tech.Many students use the Internet, cellphones and other media devices to bully other students, and this type of bullying often gets very aggressive. One reason is that bullies can be anonymous(匿名的)and enlist other bullies to make their target miserable.Another reason is that they don’t have to face their targets. So it’s easier to get rid of any empathy that they may otherwise feel. There are ways to fight against“cyber-bullying”,but many parents aren’t aware of them—and many bullied kids feel too overwhelmed to deal with the situation.
